Whether it’s a trade show or a networking meeting, we love the hum of energy before and during an event, but we’ve learned that even the most fleeting of adrenaline spikes causes us to crash afterwards for what feels like (or may indeed be) weeks on end. So here we are returning from hibernation (albeit a little bleary eyed) to bring you a few highlights from our kimchi class at Machine Project’s Kraut Fest 2009:

*A roomful of young (and young at heart) people who love kimchi = Delightful!

*A roomful of delightful people smashing produce to bits = Should have packed a bullhorn. And lab goggles.

*And yes, we did get to meet Boing Boing’s Mark Frauenfelder. The best part? He offered Mama Choe an opportunity to be a guest blogger on Boing Boing next month. She has solemnly sworn to not write about kimchi the entire time.

For more lucid recaps of the kimchi class, check out the Kraut Fest write ups on Urban Spoon featured blog, Eating LA and on Delicious Coma (a foodbuzz featured publisher). Mark Frauenfelder also posted a link on Boing Boing to his Kraut Fest photos.

Many, many thanks to the lovely folks over at Machine Project in LA for including us in Kraut Fest 2009, and for putting together other cool classes like a monster prop and costume workshop that we are dying to go to. Kimchi-monster suit, here we come.

Granny Choe mentioned on Boing Boing!

Friday, September 4th, 2009

The kimchi class that Granny Choe is leading as part of Kraut Fest 2009 at Machine Project in LA this Sunday is SOLD OUT. Probably thanks to the mention on Boing Boing… Yes, that Boing Boing. The one that gets over 5 million unique visitors per month. The one that’s on Technorati’s list of most influential blogs. The one that’s ranked in the top 5 most-visited blogs on the web. Wowee.

Someone just told us about the Boing Boing mention (Thanks, Andres) and we are quite excited. Like, multiple exclamation points excited (but we don’t want to appear juvenile, so we are making every effort to contain ourselves). We love Boing Boing. We follow them on Twitter. Boing Boing co-founder, Mark Frauenfelder, said he’s “really looking forward to learning how to make kimchi from Granny Choe.” We are feeling a little starstruck.

Even though registration is full for hands-on participation in the class, you can still come down to hang out and observe. Should be fun. We are getting all amped up. Hope to see you there…

Mr. Bae successfully makes kimchi foods look pretty

Friday, September 4th, 2009

Granny Choe’s new BFF — food photographer and kimchifan, Patrick Bae – was kind enough to trek out to kimchi headquarters earlier this week to shoot some kimchi-based recipes that we prepared for use on our website, including (drumroll, please) kimchi chocolate. Here’s a behind-the-scenes shot of us prepping a kimchi pancake for its moment in the spotlight. You can check out a few more preview pics on Mr. Bae’s photostream, and the final shots will soon be posted on our recipe page. Many thanks for the beautiful work, Patrick! It ain’t easy making pickled cabbage infused foods look good.

Apparently they were giving away free kimchi burgers…

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009

Apparently they were giving away free kimchi burgers at New York Hotdog & Coffee (a hip fusion eatery that also serves up stuff like bulgogi hot dogs)! Man, too bad that was yesterday. And also, too bad we live in California. This pic from their site looks so darn tasty that we have decided that we must take advantage of our westerly location and get us some In-N-Out burgers for lunch, then dress ‘em up with our own delicious kimchi. Nom, nom, nom.

Kimchi-Chanel. I… I think I’m in love.

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009

Ordinarily I would scoff at the idea of driving an hour just so I could drop $14 bucks on a magazine, but you, Gastronomica’s Summer 2009 issue cover, are gorgeous and hilarious and totally worth it. Hongtu Zhang, Kimchi-Chanel, 1997.  Courtesy of the artist.

Win a year’s supply of free kimchi

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009

We here at kimchi headquarters know that what’s repugnant to some can be quite delightful to others, so we are officially hosting a “Stinky Stuff” art contest. It’s simple: send us something beautiful inspired by something stinky.

Your art can take any form from a b/w comic of your smelly roommate to an oil painting of your local gas station. The lucky winner gets bragging rights plus a year’s supply of stinky, spicy, delicious kimchi from Granny Choe’s Kimchi Co.

Entry deadline: Oct 1, 2009

Visit GrannyChoe.com/win for entry details.
